2016 Massachusetts Farm & Sea to School Conference

November 4, 2016 - The conference brings together farm to cafeteria advocates – farmers, food service professionals, educators, policy makers, public health advocates, community organizers, youth leaders and more – for a daylong event with workshops and panel discussions addressing a wide variety of farm to school topics including:

  • local foods procurement and promotion

  • experiential food and nutrition education

  • food, farm, and nutrition policy

  • growing for the institutional market

  • local, state, and regional networking

Alexis will be hosting a 1-hour workshop geared towards school advocates who may be intimidated by research or data collection. The presentation will include formal and informal methods to collect quantitative and qualitative data to measure program success, as well as the advantages of collecting data.

“It smells gorgeous,” announces Jacen Arbelo, 8, taking a whiff of the pesto he just helped make. Earlier in the morning, he picked the main ingredients, kale and basil, from a garden nearby. He sets to work on the next step, spreading pesto on tortillas and assembling them with other fresh vegetables. The East Boston YMCA Is Offering Cooking Classes and Urban Gardening

In East Boston, more than 30 percent of adults are obese. And of Boston’s six neighborhoods, it’s considered the worst food desert, with the lowest number of grocery stores per neighborhood in the city.

But the East Boston YMCA is not dwelling on these statistics. Instead, it’s working to change them.

For the last year, the East Boston Y has offered a laundry list of free, all-ages programs—including an on-site garden, healthy cooking classes, and a kids gardening group—aimed at addressing food access inequality. All of the classes are open not just to Y members, but anybody interested in attending...
