Learning with Our Neighbors, The Freight Farmers

Last week, students visited with Shawn and Connie Cooney at Corner Stalk Farm in East Boston. The husband and wife team began the farm, which is housed in 4 shipping containers, in 2013. Each container is a fully outfitted hydroponic farm capable of growing 250,000 heads of lettuce at one time. The containers are lit with blue and red LED lights specifically designed to support this type of growing system. Corner Stalk sells its produce locally at the Boston Public Market, as well as through Katsiroubas Bros. produce supply and a handful of local customers.

Our students had the opportunity to tour each container, harvest and taste produce and learn more about this unique urban farm!
